Saint Francis of Assisi is the patron saint of animals, the environment, and is also one of the two patron saints of Italy. He died on October 4, 1226 at the age of 45 and was declared a saint in 1228. St. Francis was never ordained in the Catholic priesthood but is seen as one of the most recognized religious figures in history.
